Probably the second edition of this atlas designed by Jean Francois Baron de Bourgoing (1748-1811) to accompany the three volumes forming his work Tableau de l' Espagne moderne. This atlas contains beautiful engraved illustrations and maps of Spanish cities and two folding plates with twelve figures illustrating the traditional bullfights, collected from the three text volumes. The first edition of this work was probably published in 1789 (some bibliographies mention an earlier anonymous issue of 1788) under the title Nouveau Voyage en Europe, ou, tableau de l' etat actuel de cette monarchie, and republished in 1797, 1803 and in 1808 in London. It is uncertain whether the atlas was published together with the first two editions, as Goldsmiths (ed. of 1789) mentions only three volumes and not the fourth atlas volume as does BNF relating to the third edition of 1803, together with which the atlas was published according to the OCLC (Kress mentions the atlas only with the fourth ed. of 1807). De Bourgoing was one of the commanders of the Legion d' honneur, member of the Academy of Science at Kopenhagen and of the Academy of Art at Stockholm. He also was minister of France in Spain and negotiated between the two countries in war which led to the treaty of peace signed at Bâle in 1795. The work was also translated into German (1789-1790).
