Contemporary marbled calf, gold-tooled spine. With 20 engraved maps (map 16 in 2 parts) and 3 engraved plates. [8], 417, [3] pp. Original edition of a famous voyage around the world, the first to be undertaken by the French, under the command of Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811). Bougainville was a pupil of d'Alembert and a man of science, a fervent adherent to the French Encyclopedists, and himself the travelling philosopher par excellence. Bougainville's voyage presented a milestone in the history of voyages, not only for its dicoveries in the Pacific, but also for the way it was organised with true scientific precision. It included a naturalist, an astronomer and "modern" equipment in the form of a chronometer perfected with Leroy's isocromic spring to determine longitudes. The exploration and observations also were carried out with great scientific consciousness. Bougainville was highly praised by Diderot, not only as a scientist and explorer but also as the ideal social man. Bougainville, with the account of his voyage certainly did his teachers proud, as it provided the philosophers with a faithful documentation for their theories of the "noble savage". It was the first time that savages who had had no contact with the civilized world were observed by a man of science raised in the school of the Enlightenment. Bougainville was in Buenos Aires when the order arrived for the expulsion of the Jesuits from Paraguay. The chapter he wrote about the Missions also is full of interesting facts. Bougainville's voyage created great interest among the French in the Pacific, which resulted in the famous later voyages by Du Fresne and La Pérouse. Gathering F bound twice, including map 3; a few scattered collector's stamps. A good copy with bookplate of Egremont on inside of front cover.
Borba de Moraes, p. 115; Chadenat 25; Hill 163; Kroepelien 109; O'Reilly & Reitman 283; Sabin 6864.
