Original edition of the work containing the first real treatise on modern oceanography by Botéro (1533-1617). Besides this treatise on the ocean, the work contains the well-known treatises on political-philosophical subjects, in which the fundamentals of religion and politics and the well-being of the state. These original treatises are full with sensible and profound judgements. Because of the dominance of politics over religion in his points of view, this work became an important one for the case of the roman contra-reformation.However, the above named work on the ocean is by far the most interesting one. In nine chapters are following subjects treated: Proportions of water and earth compared; depth of the sea; reasons why the waterlevel of the sea does not rise when streams of water (rivers) come in; physical qualities; movements (3 chapters) and the geographical divisions in in seas and oceans.
