Manuscript epic poem, made for "Lovely Elsje van Son", as a gift on her wedding-day, by her friend George Henry James Elliot Boswel (1830-1874), a popular poet of English descent, who made his living as a clerk and later senior official at the Dutch Department of Colonial Affairs. "Mooi Elsje" is one of the poems included in the only collection of Boswel's work published during his short lifetime, In één bandje (1863).
The lengthy poem relates how Elsje's lover, a young fisherman, Harmen, probably from Scheveningen, named his boat proudly after his young bride: "Mooi Elsje". Then one day the name-plate of his boat was washed ashore and his ship was believed to be lost. But as if by a miracle the fisherman turns up again, safe and sound, and the pair is married. The old boat's nameplate is hung upon the wall in their home, and the new boat is more prudently called: "With God safe at Sea".
All this is nicely decorated and illustrated with fine washed pen drawings in various inks, presenting a fine wedding memorial, a kind of "album amicorum" from one friend only. The poem was no doubt also recited in full at the wedding party.

Good copy.- (Binding rubbed, loose in spine; piece of paper pasted onto verso of the first silk endpaper, probably to cover some personal note).
Van der Aa 21, 149.
