First French edition of a very important work on the trade-settlements on the Westcoast of Africa, first published in Dutch in 1704 by the same publisher. The author, Willem Bosman, was Chief Factor for the Dutch at the Castle of St. George d'Elmina and had lived on Africa's Westcoast for 14 years. His work on Guinea was on of the best known travel accounts, since it provides the reader with detailed information on areas which were hardly described by other travellers, and also gives information on commercial activities, such as trade in gold, ivory or slaves.
The book is written in the form of letters to a friend, Dr. D. Havard, living in the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The 2 last letters, the nrs. XXI and XXII, are written by the author's colleagues and contain about 50 pages. The first is a description of Rio Formosa, or the river of Benin, written by David van Nyendael, and is dated Sept. 1, 1702. The second is a description of the Tooth and Grain Coast, written by Jan Snoek, dated Jan.2, 1702.

Good copy.- (Spine discol., binding rubbed; some plates foxed).
Gay 2808; Tiele 174, note.
