Rare early edition of one of the most popular primary school reading books of the early 19th century, meant for the youngest children from 5 to 7 years of age. Together with its parallel title "Moeder Anna en hare Kindertjes", and with Anslijn's primary reading book "De Brave Hendrik" these books teached the new morals to the common people like Campe's and Salzmann's books did to the better classes. As the author states in his preface, his reading books were all based on the same principle, which he calls the "A B C of Morality", that is that parents always know best. And indeed the stories are strictly moralistic, even severe, since terrible things happen to misbehaving children.
The present edition apparently is the second. In the preface a first edition is mentioned published shortly before, which was almost immediately sold out, and had been very well received by the press. But numerous editions were still to come, the primary reading books by Anslijn and Heyningen Bosch becoming vastly popular and remaining in use for over half a century. Mattheus van Heyningen Bosch was not a schoolteacher like Anslijn, but editor of the "Provinciale  Groninger Courant" from 1806 till 1821. The illustration on title shows an older man reading to a group of children seated under some trees. Another engraving shows a nice view of a classroom. The text is printed in four different lettertypes.
