Rennes, Jean Hardy, 1631. Small 8vo. Contemporary vellum. Woodcut vignette on title. (8), 222 pp.

First French edition of a geographical and historical  description of Cocinchina, now Laos and Cambodia, followed  by a history of the Jesuit mission in these regions, first published in Italian at Rome in 1631. Christophoro Borri, a native of Milano in Italy, (d. 1632), had worked as one of the first missionaries at Cocinchina. As he occupied  himself with mathematics and occult science, he was expelled by the Order of the Jesuits. He entered the Order of the Cistercians and taught mathematics at the Universities of Coimbra and Lisbon in Portugal.
Borri's Relatione della nuova  missione delli P.P. della Compagnia di Giesu, al regno della  Cocincina, still is famous as one of the earliest accounts on this part of China. After the French translation by the Jesuit Antoine de la Croix (1596-1641), Latin, English, Dutch and German editions appeared in the following years. In chapter VIII an account of the trade and ports at the sea of Cochinchina is given, which is a very important source for the history of the commercial relations between the Cochinchinese region and China and Japan. Of the two French editions which appeared in 1631, (one in Rennes and one in Lille), our Rennes-edition is the very rare original French edition.

Good copy.- (Leaf with privilege lacking).
Backer-Sommervogel II, 1687; Cordier, Indosinica III, 1917-18; Chadenat  4853 (other French edition).
