BORGET, Auguste.Fragments d'un voyage autour du monde. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Moulins, P.A. Desrosiers, (1850). Oblong 4to. Original boards with lithographed title on front cover. Lithographed title page, 12 full-page tinted lithographs by A. Borget. 11 text lvs. Very rare copy of an album of 12 two-toned lithographs depicting views of New York, Lima, Buenos Ayres, Canton and Honolulu, and romantic landscapes, mainly from South America by A. Borget (1809-1877) after his drawings made during his travels. Included are charming plates depicting a windmill at the banks of the Hudson river at New York, and scenes of resting travellers, streetscenes and views in Buenos Aires, Lima, and Manilla, a busy marketplace in China and a beach scene at Honolulu. Borget visited this island briefly in 1839. The work seems to have been published with a varying number of text leaves and plates in varying order. There is no leaf accompanying plate 10. According to Forbes 'neither copy appears ever to have this sheet, and it may well be never issued.' In our copy plate 4 is called Un ravin dans la sierra de Cordova. In other copies one finds a plate 4 called L'habitation d'un fakir sur les bords de Gange. This copy is dedicated by the author to his friend E. Forgues. This seems to be the writer Emile Daurand Forgues, who translated works of Melville and Hawthorne. On the title page Borget wrote 'A son ami..'' Good copy.- (Sl. stained lvs.)
Borba de Moraes I, 112; Forbes II, 1766; Deak 454; Stravides, Auguste Borget peintre-voyaguer autour du monde, 1999, pp. 15-21; NUC lists 3 copies; not in Sabin.
