Including two animals unknown to Buffon
[CHILDREN'S BOOKS - ZOOLOGY].[Animal picture book].      The Netherlands, ca. 1800). Sm.8vo. Contemp. blind wrappers. With 8 full-page engraved plates of animals, all nicely coloured by hand. (16) pp. Children's picture book with beautiful full-page pictures of animals, all plates accompanied by one leaf of text in verse and in prose. The first plate is titled: "Het Zwyn" (The Pig), with a nice picture of a pig coloured in yellow and brown, standing on yellow and green grass, accompanied by a poem starting with the line: "Gulzig, vuil en traag is 't zwijn" (Greedy, dirty and slow is the pig), and warning the children never to be like one! Further depicted are a bull, a sheep with her lamb, a cow, a goat, and some curious animals, like "De Lemmus en de Getulus", explained to the children as a sort of rabbit and a sort of squirrel, "De Aquaticus en de Philander", a sort of tortoise known to Plinius, and a sort of ape, but both not known to Buffon as stated in the accompanying text, and finally "De Gulzo of Veelvraat", described as a very greedy sort of dog, living in the woods of Germany. All in all a most charming and rather curious picture book, seemingly published as such, without any title or publisher's address. It could have been intended as a children's colouring book, but then our child must have coloured it under guidance with much care. The size is ca. 10 x 16 cm. Good copy of a rare anonymous item.
