"Based on a true story"
[CHILDREN'S BOOKS].Spiegel der jeugd, voorgesteld in het veertien-jarig leven van René d'Aubert; eene ware geschiedenis. ![]() ![]() ![]() Derde en verbeterde druk. Amsterdam, Schalekamp, Van de Grampel, (ca. 1825). Sm.8vo. Orig. boards. With illustration on engraved title, and 2 full-page engraved plates, all beautiful coloured by hand. (6), 123 pp. Fine illustrated educational reading book, containing the true story of the exemplary life of a young boy living at Paris, from 1780 to 1794, who died when only fourteen years old. The anonymous Dutch author explains in the preface to have translated this story from a manuscript given him by a French lady, and he starts the book with a short public letter addressed to this lady, who remains anonymous as well. All this however, was probably just part of the literary form and intended to make the book more interesting. And indeed, the book became quite popular. Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed; a child's scribbling on verso of last blank leaf).
Coll. Caljé-Van Gulik 226 (2nd ed. of 1821); not in Cat. Van Rijn, KLKL, etc.; Saalmink p. 1823 lists four copies.
