The plates illustrate the discovery of the wheel, the invention of cloth and weaving, of the alphabet and writing, of glass steam, engraving, and music, etc. Other subjects treated are navigation, weapons, printing, paper, porcelain, clocks, electricity, air balloons, playing cards, painting, lithography, photography, etc. A heading on front cover reads: "Lectures illustrées", and in the richly decorated borders the following titles are listed: Magasin des Enfants - Robinson des Enfants - Don Quichotte - Caract. des Animaux - Jeux de l'Enfance - Gulliver des Enfants.
