Third edition of a nicely produced and charmingly illustrated French children's school book, half of which is taken up by fables, printed in a small type. The first part of the book, of about 40 pages teaches the children some general notions about the world, discussing air, clouds, rain, mist, vapour, water, metal, precious stones, the sea, navigation, salt, the sun, moon, light, etc., including some arithmetic at the end.
The second part contains entertaining and instructive stories teaching the children about all sorts of subjects, like geography, Chinese children, eyes, teeth, hair, horses, soap, ants, architecture, watches, oil, air-balloons, spiders, barometers, life, death, sour, sweet, giants and dwarfs, etc. etc., taking up some 80 pages, and illustrated with plates.
The fables take up the third section with about 70 fables on some 140 pages, and have their own index with the names of the authors of the fables present, including Aubert, Vitallis, Barbe, Dorat, Boisard, La Fontaine, Madame de Genlis, Lichtwehr, Grozellier, Imbert, Richer, Ducerceau, etc.
The last part then contains the "Lives" of famous man, always considered very educational for children, including the lives of various fabulists, like La Fontaine, Fénélon, La Motte-Houdart, etc. At the end of the book a publisher's catalogue of four pages is added.
