Amsterdam, Joannes Roelof Poster, (1811). 4to. Wrappers. With woodcut on title, and 23 half-page woodcuts in text. (4), 68 pp.

Nicely illustrated popular natural history book for children, written in the form of a dialogue between a father and his son. Discussed and depicted on the charming woodcuts are the elephant, camel, rhinoceros, tiger, leopard, porcupine, mule, several birds  like the stork, eagle, peacock, and several fishes like the herring, salmon, etc. At that time salmon was still caught in the Dutch rivers, and on the herring - the most typical Dutch traditional seafood, the saying is quoted: "Als de Haring komt, rijden de Dokters in geene koetsen", a variant of a saying still current today, expressing something like: "When the herring is in, the physicians are out". But seriously discussed and depicted are also some mythical animals, like the unicorn and the griffin, proving the book to be a chapbook really.

Good copy, with old owner's ms. entry on title, reading: "Provinciale Commissie van Onderwijs in Friesland".
KLKL 350; Waller 1641; Muller 1085; Saalmink p. 1882 lists one copy only, in the Royal Library at The Hague.
