Amsterdam, F. Kaal, (1820). Oblong sm.8vo. Contemp. boards. With illustrations on 9 engraved plates, mostly of animals, and all beautifully coloured by hand. 117 pp.

Well produced and fine illustrated children's book on natural history and natural science, but also containing a reading lesson, and teaching various languages as well, as all illustrations on the plates are explained in Dutch, French, English and German. The plates show mostly animals, but also various carriages, attributes of the hunter, household objects, musical instruments, etc. In the reading lesson all the objects, people or animals are explained in an entertaining  story, with an extensive poem inbetween, offering the children much information not only on natural history and science, but also on art, history, games and trades, with moral lessons inbetween. It is curious to note that ice-skating is strongly spoken against as too dangerous a sport.

Good copy of a rare multi-functional school book.- (Binding sl. rubbed).
Cat. Van Rijn 812; Saalmink p. 554 lists one copy only, at the Rijksuniversiteit in Leyden.
