Rare complete series of the "instructive recreations" from a French periodical intended for parents and children. Here only the pieces to amuse and instruct the children are collected and edited by Jules Delbrück, who explains in his preface that modern times, in which steam and electricity are introduced into daily life, call for the children to learn at an early age and in a playful manner the elementary facts about arts, science, agriculture and industry.
Each volume contains twelve beautiful large coloured plates illustrating all aspects or products from a donkey, horse, cattle, sheep; how and what to make from paper, flax, cotton, leather, clay, glass, silk, iron; teaching about geography, cosmology, chemistry, electricity, mechanics, architecture, metereology, anatomy; illustrating poisonous animals, fishes on the dinner table, the five senses, musical instruments, weights and measures, quiet and movement, etc., and including a fine large plate illustrating all kinds of children's games and pastimes. These plates are explained by means of little stories, and further present are poems, dialogues, travel stories, fairy-tales, fables, proverbs, wise sayings, etc., while each volume also contains twelve children's songs or music to dance and play to.
The text was provided by enthusiastic parents, but before acceptance everything was first tested upon little children themselves, to see if they were amused or bored. The plates were designed and lithographed by a number of the finest artists, like Belin, Bethmont, Amiel, Collette, etc., and the plates were colour-printed by Lemercier and Ernest Meyer at Paris. The music was composed by Besozzi, Allyre Bureau, etc., but often also popular tunes were adapted by Stephanie Maas, S. de Wild, etc., and even a melody of Mozart was included.
All in all, a highly sophisticated and well cared for collection of instructive pieces for little children's pastime. When two volumes were published the work received an international medal at the London Exhibition of 1862, a fact which is proudly noted in the later volumes on versos of the titles. Complete and in good condition, the work is very rare.

Fine set, from the library of Carl Egon, Prince of Fürstenberg, with his crowned book-label in all volumes.- (Bindings only minimal rubbed and discoloured).
