In praise of the Dutch national virtues and Czar Alexander I
[CHILDREN'S BOOKS].Leerzaam letterhof. Voor de Nederlandsche Jeugd. Tweede Stukje. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Hendrik Timmer, 1815. Small 4to. Boards. With 8 full-page engraved plates, all finely coloured by hand. 80 pp. First edition of the second part of a well produced and attractively hand-coloured children's book with short stories, dialogues, verses, riddles, number- and word-games, etc. The excitement of the historical events of the year, 1815, seems to have strongly affected the author, as several pieces are vehemently anti-Napoleon, while others praise the Russian Czar Alexander, and Stadtholder Willem V., who presently had become the first Dutch King. Much attention also is given to the Dutch national virtues, and to navigation and commerce. One of the plates shows the happy return of a Dutch boy who had served as a Garde d'Honneur in Napoleon's Army, but in the accompanying verse, much emphasis is put on the fact that the unfortunate boy had been forced to join by a tyrant. Good copy of a rare book, with ms. prize certificaate, the prize awarded to W.H. Bokma de Boer, signed by his teacher C.W. Kitsz, and dated Leeuwarden 1820.- (Front cover missing; ink of prize certificate faded).
Not in Waller, KLKL, Cat. Van Rijn, etc.; not in NUC.
