Amst., G. Theod. Bom, (ca. 1855). Oblong sm.8vo. Original cloth, richly blind-stamped, with gilt illustration of a horse on frontcover. With 8 (of 9) full-page lithographed plates of horses after H. Vernet, all beautifully coloured by hand. 62 (of 64), (2) pp.

Rare children's book with short stories, dialogues and poems on the life and the various uses of the horse, with the main intention to teach children never to be cruel with animals or to tease them. The fine lithographed plates, made after drawings by the well-known French artist on horses, Horace Vernet, show horses on the race-track, pulling various sorts of carriages, working a mill, etc. They all are in exceptional fine colouring. The Amsterdam publisher G. Theod. Bom became famous for his small lithographed children's books, as well as for his larger lithographed picture books from the 1860's, the latter described in a later part of this catalogue.

Fine copy.- (Recased, with new endpapers, loose in spine; one plate, and pp. 31-32 lacking).
