Orig. wrappers, with title within richly ornamental woodcut borders on front cover, and large woodcut vignette on back cover. With 12 full-page lithographed plates, beautifully coloured by hand, all plates with 4 lines of verse underneath, versos blank. (12) lvs. Beautifully designed and hand-coloured lithographed picture book for children, published by the Belgian publisher's Glénisson & Van Genechten at Turnhout, famous for its chapbooks and catchpenny prints. The book elaborately depicts a group of children, both boys and girls, playing soldiers. The first plate shows a little standard-bearer holding a large flag and surrounded by the instruments of war, like a drum and canon balls at one side and guns and bayonets, a sword, a soldier's hat and a small canon at the other side. The facing plate shows a little captain inspecting his troops. Other plates show the relief of the watch-post, attacking a hobby-horse-rider, carrying a wounded soldier, stealing from a young civilian, deserting the army, conquering a grown-up, receiving military honour, marching, etc. All plates have a title above and the action is explained in verses underneath. Fine copy.- (A few marginal stains).
