Poetical warnings against cursing, drinking, smoking, visiting fortune-tellers and more
[CHILDREN'S BOOKS].Gedichtjes voor Kinderen uit Behoeftigen Stand.     Amst., J.H. en G. van Heteren, 1850. Small 8vo. Original dark-blue boards, with small gilt coat-of-arms of Amsterdam in centre on both sides. With 2 full-page lithographed plates by P.W.M. Trap. (4), 52 pp. Rare collection of poems for children of the poor. Next to the usual moralistic and educational verses, with themes as obedience and politeness, willingness to learn, love for parents and God, being nice to animals etc. etc., here we also find verses with themes which were obviously thought to be special educational for poor children, with warnings against cursing, drinking, wandering on the streets, smoking a pipe, going to a fortune-teller, buying songs from a pedlar, stealing apples from an apple-cart, ringing doorbells falsely, etc. There also is a poem on a girl from a wellfare-colony and one on a boy who firmly decides to become a working-man as soon as school is finished. The two nice plates show a fisherman and a farmer sowing. Fine copy in Amsterdam prize-binding, with large folding printed certificate of the "Stads Armen-Scholen", the first prize awarded to Johanna Muller, pupil at the poor-school on the Molenpad, signed by the Secretary C.H. Backer, and dated 26. Octo.
Not in Wirth; not in NUC; no Amsterdam "Stads Armen-Scholen" in "De Prijs is het Bewijs", nor in "Aanvulling".
