Poetry to educate the young
[CHILDREN'S BOOKS].De vier stonden van den dag vervat in zestien afbeeldingen, met nuttige lessen voor Nederlands Jeugd. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Delft, J. de Groot, 1798. Small 8vo. Original boards. With illustration on engraved title and 16 full-page engraved plates by H. Roosing. 94, (2) pp. Fine illustrated book of verse. As the anonymous author explains in his preface, the book is meant to educate youth, and what, he asks, could be a better way to do so, than by the art of poetry following the footsteps of the famous Van Alphen, Van Eyck, Riemsnyder, Jordens and Van Ollefen. The motto of the book reads: "Die in zyn jeugd, Het pad der deugd, Heeft ingeslaagen, En 't goede doet, Wacht welgemoed, Zyn oude dagen (Who has chosen the right path in youth and does the right things, can cheerfully await old age). The book treats the four parts of the day for rich people and for working people, each part illustrated by four fine engraved plates. In the morning the four plates show a farmer, a milkman, a bourgeois family at breakfast, and a rich man with his servant. In the noon they show farmers eating in the field, the family of a handworksman eating in the kitchen, a fat cook, and a rich dinner party. In the evening they show a homely family reading and working before the fire, an artist drawing in his studio, a young lady reading, and a nice view into a lively coffee-house. And in the night the plates show a city-guard, a soldier at guard, the departing of visitors from a rich house, and a view into a poor people's bedroom, father sleeping and mother with her infant-child. Only title and first plate were coloured by hand, the second plate is partly coloured and the rest left uncoloured. Good copy of a rare work.- (Binding rubbed, spine loosening).
