Curious unrecorded children's books
[CHILDREN'S BOOKS].De nieuwe toverlantaarn. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, alle Boekverkopers, (ca. 1800). Sm.8vo. Contemp. half calf. With a street-musician carrying a magic lantern on his back on engraved title, and 24 full-page engraved plates, mostly showing street characters and caricatures, all very nicely and brightly coloured by hand. 41, (3); 64; 63, (1); 64 pp. Rare and curious children's book, containing satirical songs and poems about public figures and street-characters, but also educational dialogues between a father and a son on the subject of decent behaviour, often centred on notions like "citoyen", "egalité", "hypocrisy", etc., and including several fables. The composition suggests that the book was published in parts, after the first part follow 3 pages of a publisher's catalogue of children's books, but the collation continues throughout. Several leaves are missing from the text, but 24 very attractive handcoloured plates are present, showing soldiers, clowns, a pierrot, caricatural characters, like Hansje Pos, Hans Beuling, etc., but also including three flowers, a rose, a carnation and an avens. The title, as well as the words "o zo mooi!", coming out of the mouth of the title-character, suggest a connection with the "Lanterne Magique, of Toverlantaern, o zo mooi!", published as a satirical anti-Patriotic, and anti-French periodical in the 1780's. Its counter-part, anti-Orangist and pro-French, then was called "Nieuwe Tovrlantaarn" (New Magic Lantern). So the fact that the present children's book is also titled "New Magic Lantern" suggest it to be pro-French, but fun is also made of excessieve French imitation, e.g. of the "Bonjour Citoyen" by a clown, of a "Pere Gazette", etc. Still fun is made too of a priest and a nun, and one of the caricatures, titled national buffoon, shows a religious man clad in red, white and blue, and is described as hypocrite. Still, the lessons drawn at the end of the dialogues and fables are educationally correct, but the texts are often quite unusual for a children's books, as also are the striking plates. A most curious book, not found recorded. Good but sl. used and incomplete copy.- (Lacks lvs. E8-F2, F7-H1, P1 and P8).
Unrecorded.
