First edition of a famous work by the French philosopher and natural scientist Charles Bonnet (1720-1793). His work presenting new discoveries on the functions of plantleaves, combined with quite novel experiments on the chemical reactions of leaves of various plants, made a great impression on all natural scientists. It virtually introduced a new science: vegetative physics. By its novelty and the spicyness of its  details, the work also became popular with the general public.
The author seemed to have caught nature in the act, clearly showing the relations of the plant with all surrounding elements, air, sun and soil, by which it as a living being was able to breath, to grow by nourishment, and to be fertile. The work is beautifully illustrated with engraved plates by renowned artists of the time. The work also was translated into German, and into Dutch.
