Lyon, Thomas Soubron, 1593. 2 parts in 1 vol. 12mo. Old calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with gilt fillet borders on sides, g.e. Large woodcut printer's device on title of the first part and smaller variant device on title of the second part. 68; 153, (1) pp.

Extremely rare Lyon edition of the light-erotic Neo-Latin verses by Jean Bonnefons, born at Clermont in Auvergne in 1554, and died at Paris in 1614. Written in his youth and first published in Paris in 1587 these poems became quite popular with University students. All early editions consist of two parts, the first with the verses in Latin, and the second with the Imitations in French by Gilles Durand together with Durand's own amourous poetry. Still in 1659 an edition was published at Leyden in the Netherlands under the title Basiae, a conventional title for the genre, undoubtedly inspired by the same title of the famous Neo-Latin  love poems by Janus Secundus.
The present edition is finely printed in a small Italic type, and nicely adorned with some ornamental woodcut intitials and vignettes, including a charming woodcut headpiece of people swimming. On verso of the last leaf within woodcut cartouche: "Lugduni, Excudebat Stephanus Servain, 1593". The publisher Thomas Soubron was active at Lyons from 1592 till 1622. He started his career with publishing the poetry by Ronsard in 1592, and Remy Belleau in 1593. Baudrier IV, pp. 355-356, lists three publications for 1593, all with the printer's cartouche of Stephanus Servain at the end, but no edition of Bonnefons.

Good copy of a rare edition.- (Binding rubbed and sl. dam., with later paper labels on spine; some sl. staining and thumbing; a few lines of the first part underlined in red).
Not in Baudrier; STC French p. 75 (both parts listed separate); not in Adams, or Tchemerzine.
