Leipsig, Sumptibus Engelhardt Benjamin Suikerti, 1780. XIV, 66 pp. Ad 1: Original 4to-edition of this Oration on the occasion of the commemoration of the bicentennial of the Unie van Utrecht - the true and first official declaration of independence of the Dutch Republic -, held on the same day and in the same auditorium in which the Unie was concluded on 29 January 1579, dedicated to the Stadtholder William V. There is also an edition in folio and a translation in Dutch by Bondam's son Rutger (1757-1819), both published by Abraham van Paddenburg in 1779. In 1779 Pieter Bondam (1727-1800), a well-known professor of Law, was rector of the Utrecht University. Apart from his juridical works he is also known for historical and literary publications, and this oration is considered to be one of his main works, treating mainly the political principles on which the Dutch Republic was founded. On the last 9 pages there are two laudatory poems by his colleagues Franciscus Burmannus and 'J.V.D.D.'. Ad 2: Original edition of the inaugural oration of the orangist professor Adriaan Kluit (1735-1807), who was appointed as the first professor of Dutch history and archaeology in Leyden, in 1779. In this oration, which caused a lot of political debate, the author strictly opposes the popular doctrine of sovereignty of the people. According to Kluit, sovereignty should have been switched over from the Spanish King to the Stadtholder in 1581. Adriaan Kluit is also the author of a number of historical, legal, religious and polemical works. One of his most notable achievements is the unfinished Historia critica comitatus Hollandiae et Zelandiae (...) (1777-1782), on the history of the counties Holland and Zeeland. Kluit has added to his oration an profusely annotated Latin translation of a missive sent to Philips II on behalf of William of Orange to complain about gthe Duke of Alva (pp. (1-44)), probably written by Philips van Marnix van Sint Aldegonde and published in 1573 with the title: Sendtbrief in forme van supplicatie aen die conincklicke majesteyt van Spaengien; van wegen des princes van Orangien ... aenwijsende den rechten oorspronck van alle teghenwoordige beroerten (Dordrecht, Jan I Canin, 1573; Bor IV, p. 342ff., Typ. Bat. 5724). Ad 3: First edition of the main part of the Walthariuslied, written in Latin hexameters, probably by Eckehard I of St. Gallen around 940, as edited by the German Lawyer and art historian Friedrich Chr. Jonathan Fischer (1757-1797), from 1779 on professor of Law at the University of Halle. The story is about a prince Walther from Aquitaine and a princess Hildegondt from Burgundy, who had been taken hostages by Attila, king of the Huns, and who were now on the run from Attila's court, back to their home countries in France where they would marry. In the forests of Wasichen (the Vosges), the couple is attacked by the Frankish king Gunther and his men, but in the end they arrive home safely. The final part of the text is preserved in a separate manuscript, that was published by Friedrich as a 'Continuatio' in 1792. As most copies, our copy is without this rare appendix (of 34 pp.). Good copies.- (Ad 3; sl. browned throughout as usual with German paper).
Ad 1: Dekkers p. 20, no. 11; ad 2: G.A. Boutelje, Bijdr. tot de kennis van Kluits opvattingen over onze geschiedenis (1920); Dekkers p. 94, no.2; NNBW III, p.696f.; ad 3: Goedeke I, p. 14, no. 7.
