One of the earliest books printed in Zwolle
BONAVENTURA.Sermones de tempore et de sanctis. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Zwolle, (Johannes de Vollenhoe), 1479. 4to. Later calf, red and blue mottled edges. All initials supplied in red, rubricated throughout. (340) lvs. First edition of a pseudo-Bonaventura, directly starting on recto of first leaf with the index: "Registrum sermonum et de tempore et de sanctis cum communi sanctorum at populum divini Bonaventure Cardinalis, devoti et seraphici sacre theologie professoris eximij feliciter incipit". The present collection of sermons was ascribed to the very popular S. Bonaventura who lived in the 13th century, but they were actually written by Servasanctus Faventinus, one of Bonaventura's contemporaries. The present work is one of the first printed dated books published at Zwolle, printed at the first press in the city. In the earliest printing period at Zwolle two types were used, called Zwolle type 1 and Zwolle type 2 by Hellinga, or also De Vollenhoe type as one publication printed in the Zwolle type 2 mentions in the colophon the name of Johannes de Vollenhoe. The present incunable, which was always ascribed to Pieter van Os, is now ascribed to Johannes de Vollenhoe, since it is printed in the Zwolle type 2. Only very little is known about De Vollenhoe, it is possible that he was working for a financial syndicate. It was shown by the Hellinga's that Van Os van Breda was connected with De Vollenhoe's press from 1479. The printing is of a fine quality, suggesting that experienced workmen used to handle the press. The book is well produced, and printed in Gothic type in two columns, with 39 lines to a page. All initials are supplied in red and the book is nicely rubricated throughout. An extra folio leaf is bound in at the beginning of our copy, with manuscript notes in Latin, in an old hand, and some ms. notes are also present in the margins of the book. Good, but rather used copy, with ample margins.- (Binding rubbed and sl. dam., sl. loosening in spine; the 4 blanks lacking; waterst.).
