Rare devotional richly illustrated post-incunable, the first and only edition of the translation into Dutch of the Vitis Mystica, or The true vine, a treatise on the Passion of our Lord, a Latin mystical and devotional text contemplating Christ's words: "I am the true grapevine" (John 15:1-2). The work was earlier ascribed to St. Bernard, but nowadays the work is generally considered a work by Bonaventura (1217-1274). The text places intense focus on the details of the suffering endured by Christ in the Passion employing a graphic emotional style, characteristic of Bonaventura who left a remarkable body of works on mysticism and contemplation that inspired many later generations of devotional writers
Our copy has also a very interesting provenance, with manuscript entry on the front paste-down reading: "Tot ghebruyck van Sr. Maria Coninck, Religieuse in Leliendael. Ick ben int Clooster ghekomen, den 1 Augustus 1636, en ghekleet den 20 Januari 1637, gheprofessit den 24 Januari 1638, tot Godts eeren en mijnder ziele salicheijt moet het sijn Amen" (For use of Sister Maria Coninck, nun at Leliëndael. I came into the monastery on the first of August 1636, and got my habit on January 20, 1637, took my vows on January 24, 1638, for God's honour and my soul's salvation must it be Amen). Leliëndaal was the Priory of Norbertinesses, established at Hombeek  in 1233, and moved to Malines in 1585. At the end a sixteenth-century ownership's entry, probably of the first owner, confirms the Malines provenance: "Dese boec hoert toe Lysbeth vande Zype we(du)w Houns..." (This book belongs to Lysbeth vande Zype, Widow (of) Houns). Arnoldus Buchelius mentions in his Inscriptiones a tomb on the graveyard of the St. Janskerk at Malines, belonging to Jan Huens (d. 1527) and his wife Elisabeth vanden Zijpe (d. 1561). The entry must have been written between 1527 and 1561 and our copy undoubtedly stayed in Malines till it came in the possession of Sister Maria Coninck.

Fine copy of a very rare illustrated postincunable in excellent condition.
