Loven (= Haarlem), Niclaes Braau, (ca 1677). 12mo. Contemporary vellum over wooden boards. Woodcut vignette on title, woodcut end-piece and initials. 307 (5) pp.

Early Dutch edition of Giovanni Bona's ascetical work concerning rules and principles of the Christian life. The first Latin edition appeared in 1673 under the title Principia et documenta vitae Christianae. Giovanni Bona (Mondovi 1609 - Rome, 1674) was an Italian Cistercian, cardinal, liturgist and devotional author. Although his father favoured a military career for him, he entered, after passing some years at a nearby Jesuit college, the Cistercian monastery at Pignerola, where, as also later at Rome, he pursued his studies with exceptional success.  In 1669 he was created cardinal. His best known ascetical works include Via Compendii ad Deum (1657), the present Principia et documenta vitæ Christinæ (1673) and Horologium Asceticum (Paris, 1676). The first of many editions of his complete works was published at Antwerp in 1677.
The printer Claes Braau was active in Haarlem from 1671 till 1705 publishing also other Catholic works with a Louvain imprint to avoid difficulties with the Calvinist ministers.
The work is dated here from the 'Censura', which is dated: Louvain, 1677. The only edition listed in the STCN is dated (1671) (?) and that edition apparently has an engraved title-page (three copies mentioned, one of which has also another work by Bona included with separate series of quires). Other editions found recorded include an edition in Louvain (Hallegaerde, 1677) and in Brussels (1695).

Good copy.- (Turn-ins of front cover loose).
BCNI 13561 (1677 as printing year; mentions copies in Antwerp and Weert).
