A new ortography for the Dutch language

Woodcut device on title. 40 pp. Rare original and only edition of a new spelling method for the correct writing and printing of the Dutch language by Willem Bolognino (Antwerp 1590-1669), canon of the Cathedral of Antwerp. In his dedication to the guild of Saint Ambrosius, the publisher explains that Bolognino, entrusted by the authorities to put the Dutch Bible on a level with the Latin Bible, had discovered that many words, though spelled and sounding alike, meant different things. So, he had invented a new orthography by which words which sounded alike but meant something different could be clearly distinguisghed in writing and printing. This orthography could only be generally accepted when it was taught at school, hence the dedication to the guild. The new spelling is taught in the book in fourteen chapters, the last with a table of the main changes and an explanation of the importance of the new orthography. On the last page a poem by the author in praise of the city of Antwerp. Spine damaged. Pasted bookplate of V. de la Montagne on inside front cover. A good copy.
