Contemporary half roan with green morocco title-label lettered in gold. Title printed in red and black, 5 full-page and 20 folding engraved maps and plans, including plans of Nagasaki (incl. Decima), Batavia, Amboina, and maps of Java, Australia, Ceylon, Cape of Good Hope, Bali, etc; 8 folding engraved views of Ternate, Neira, Amboina, Point de Galle, Malaka, Samboupo, Batavia and the slaughter of the Chinese at Batavia; one engraved full-page plate with the text of the "Oratio Dominica in lingua Cingalaca" in Singalese letter-type; one allegorical head piece and 28 numbered head pieces with the portraits of the Gouvernor-Generals of the Dutch East Indies. All plates are engraved by J. van Schley. IV, (2), 351, (1), 48 pp. First edition of the richly illustrated history of the Dutch East Indian Company, in chronological order arranged according to the lives of all 28 Dutch Governor-Generals from Pieter Both, appointed in 1609, up till Jacob Mossel, who was appointed in 1752. At the end an interesting treatise on the actual state of the Dutch East Indies, the V.O.C. and the means to redress the causes of its decline in the last 50 years or so, by the late Governor-General Gustaaf Willem Baron d'Imhoff (1705-1750 in Batavia), who was appointed Gouv.-Gén. in 1740 and stayed in Batavia from 1742 onwards. The text of these 'Considerations sur l'état present de la Compagnie Hollandoise des Indes Orientales' in our book (pp. 1-48) is the translation of Van Imhoff's 'Consideratiën over den tegenwoordigen staat van de Ned. Oost-Indische Compagnie', written in November 1742. The present work by Du Bois was separately published, on the urgent wishes of the publisher. The author was editing the Dutch translation of the Histoire générale des voyages by A.F. Prévost, of which already 9 volumes had been published. From 1771 onwards Du Bois also edited an augmented French Histoire générale des voyages, based on the earlier Histoire, in which the present work was then included as vol. XVII, first part. The many interesting portraits, maps, plans and view are by the engraver and print-seller Jacobus van der Schley (1715-1779), a pupil of B. Picard. He based himself a.o. of the charts from J.N. Bellin, Ingénieur hydrographe de la Marine at Paris and a chartmaker whose high standards provided for the overall accuracy od these charts (Tooley, p. 27). This copy of this highly interesting work, giving all kinds of contemporary information on the Dutch East Indies, as well on other Dutch colonies such as Ceylon, Formosa, Australia and the Cape of Good Hope, was in the possession of Professor Charles R. Boxer (1904-2000), one of the best British historians of early European overseas expansion and empire-building in Asia and elsewhere and author of the outstanding book The Dutch seaborne empire, in which Boxer examines how Holland grew to a powerful trading nation with a large fleet that not only traded but also developed an Empire. Prof. Boxer has entered his signature on the back of the front cover (dated 13.4.1981) as well as some annotations on the fly-leaves. Cat. NHSM, p. 505; NNBW 7, cols. 631-4 (Imhoff); R.V. Tooley, An introd. to the hist. of maps and mapmaking (1980), p. 27; Mendelssohn I, p. 488-9; Landwehr, VOC, 1502.
