PICART, B.
Explication des Vignettes de la Seconde Edition  des Oeuvres de Boileau, in folio. Gravées pour la seconde fois,  avec divers changemens & plusieurs Nouveaux desseins. Amst., B. Picart le Romain, 1729. Oblong 4to. Contemp. marbled calf, spine ribbed and gilt. With 25 fine engraved plates showing 25 large vignettes and 2 initials designed to embellish the second "de-luxe" folio edition of the works of Nicolas Boileau Despréaux. 8 pp.

The first edition of the luxuriously produced bibliophile edition in folio of the works of Nicolas Boileau Despréaux (1636-1711), one of the most famous French poets of the 17th century, richly illustrated and adorned with beautiful vignettes, especially designed and engraved by Bernard Picart (1673-1733), famous French draughtsman and engraver, a pupil of Sébastien le Clerc, who came to live in the Netherlands in 1710, and gave new impetus to Dutch book illustration. Added here is the newly engraved collection of vignettes intended for the second edition of the luxurious folio edition, published at Amsterdam in 1729. Most designs have remained essentially unchanged, with only some  change in details, but others were replaced by completely new designs. It is interesting to be able to compare the changes in taste and style after a decade. Only two folio-editions with Picart's vignettes were published, both at Amsterdam.

Fine copies, the Works with the bookplate of John Charles Bigham, and the booklabel of Viscount Mersey, Bignor Park, and the engraved print-series from the Library of Jean Furstenberg, with his book-label.- (Lacking portrait of Princes de Galles).
