London, Henry G. Bohn, 1861. Sm.8vo. Orig. green cloth, richly blind-stamped, with gilt title and publisher's address on spine. With 51 steel-engraved maps, one folding, and 150 wood-engraved views and illustrations in text. X, (2), 529, (1 blank) pp.

First edition of a richly illustrated popular encyclopedic manual on the geography of the modern world, giving in a clear and succinct manner all main information about all countries and continents of the world, brought up to the present date. The use of tables for all demographical and statistical information makes the book easy to use, while the numerous very accurate maps and illustrative views and pictures make the book also attractive for use by children and by the common people. And the fact that the book is not only a pictorial hand-book of world geography, but a world atlas as well, makes the buying more attractive and profitable too. On endpapers and on an extra leaf at the beginning and end of the book a publisher's catalogue is printed in blue within blue typographical borders.
The work is part of the Libraries series for which the English publisher Henry George Bohn (1796-1884) was famous. It consisted of over 750 standard works and translations on a wide range of subjects.

Fine copy, from the Signet Library, with on first endpaper the library's ms. entry.- (Binding only minimally rubbed).
