BOCHIUS, Johannes, Maximus Aemilius de VRIENDT & Henri d'OUTREMONT.Historica narratio profectionis et inaugurationis serenissimorum Belgii Principum Alberti et Isabellae, Austriae archiducum. Et eorum optatissimi in Belgium adventus, rerumque gestarum et memorabilium, gratulationum, apparatuum, et spectaculorum in ipsorum susceptione et inauguratione hactenus editorum accurata descriptio. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Antwerp, Ex officina Plantiniana, apud J. Moretum, 1602. 5 parts in 1 vol. Large folio. Contemporary vellum, ribbed spine with title lettered in ink. With large woodcut printer's device of the Officia Plantiniana at the end, 4 titles within richly engraved borders, 2 of which by Josse de Momper, 28 fine engraved plates in the second part, 15 double-page, by Pieter van der Borcht, and 2 pp. musical scores. 500, (12) pp. Original and only edition of this finely illustrated description of the festivities organized at the occasion of the journey of Albert of Austria and his wife Isabella through the Netherlands and their inauguration in Brabant and Flanders during the years 1599-1600. After the death of Archduke Ernest of Austria in 1595, King Phillip II of Spain appointed Albert & Isabella as Archduke and -duchess of the Catholic Southern Netherlands which were still in turmoil after the establishment of the free Dutch Republic in the Northern part of the Low Countries. Our copy is extra important because it has the strip of paper with the second imprint pasted on the title, as described in the Bibliotheca Belgica, seen in only one other copy. The work is divided in five parts: (1) Description of the journey of Albert & Isabella, their arrival in Brussels on the 5th of September 1599 and their inauguration in Brabant: Louvain, 24 November; Brussels, 28 Nov.; and Malines, 3 December 1599. (2) Inauguration in Antwerp on the 5th of December 1599: Pompa triumphalis et spectaculorum, in adventu et inauguratione ... , illustrated with the 28 plates. (3) Inauguration in Flanders, written by Maximus Aemilius de Vriendt: Decriptio pompae et gratulationis publicae ..., dedicated to the magistrate of Ghendt. Decriptions of the inauguration at Ghendt, 28 Jan. 1600; Courtrai, 3 Febr.; Lille, 7 Febr.; Tournai, 8 Febr.; Douai, 10 Febr.; Arras, 13 Febr., and Cambrai, 15 Febr. 1600. (4) Inauguration at Valenciennes, written by Henri d'Outreman: Descriptio triumphi et spectaculorum ... Description of the inauguration at Valenciennes, 19-20 Febr. 1600; Mons and Binche, 26 Febr. 1600. (5) Appendix (p. 488-500) on the liberation of 's-Hertogenbosch (Bois-le-Duc), probably written by Bochius. Boch(ius) (Brussels 1555-1609) went to Rome where he was a pupil of the Cardinal Bellarmin and travelled to the North of Europe including Russia in 1578. Back in his fatherland he was appointed secretary of the city of Antwerp in 1586 which post he fulfilled till his death in 1609. He was a collector of books and composed some literary works, among which his adaptation of the psalms is the most well-known. Very good copy of this sumptuous and lavishly illustrated work.
