Second edition. London, Henry Butterworth, 1837. Small 8vo. Contemporary calf. With several statistical tables in text. XXIV, 229 pp.

Critical work on insurance premiums. The author writes in the preface: "The ordinary rates of premium now charged by assurance offices will be brought under consideration in the following work, as being excessive, and considerably more than sufficient for every purpose of security, or to satisfy claims that may arise in the usual course of business; and hence it will appear, that where the assured are not participants in the profits, very large sums must be put into the pockets of the proprietors, merely as a renumeration for guarantee capital, which may be nominal as to at least three-fourths thereof, and altogether unavailable, but in a season of great and unusual mortality." The theoretical explanation is clarified by several famous cases.
