Most famous anatomical work of the most famous French surgeons of his time
BLANDIN, Philippe-Frédéric.Traité d'anatomie topographique. Atlas. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Brussels, Société Encyclographique des Sciences Médicales, 1838). Oblong folio. Contemporary half calf. With 20 lithographed plates, all richly and beautifully coloured by hand. (20) lvs. text. Most famous anatomical work by Philippe-Frédéric Blandin (1798-1849). The author wanted to show the relationship between anatomy and surgery. The first edition was published in 1826 with only 12 plates, in two volumes, one part text and one part atlas. In the present edition only the atlas was published, with the increased number of 20 plates, all accompanied by 20 leaves of explanatory text. Blandin was a surgeon at the poor house and professor of surgery at the Medical Faculty in Paris. As a young man he already showed his talent as a gifted surgical practitioner. With his description of the mixed glands of the tongue, "Blandin's glands", he became one of the most famous French surgeons of his time. Blandin also did some essential work on surgical techniques used in rhinoplasty. Good copy.- (Spine dam.; sl. foxed; sl. waterst.).
