First edition of the first Danish circumnavigation, ordered by the Danish King for the promotion of science and commerce. The author, Steen Andersen Bille, was appointed to lead the expedition. He was the son of a vice-admiral and minister of state, and after his return he also became vice-admiral of the Danish Navy and Minister of the Navy. The Galathea was the most beautiful ship of the Danish Navy and the interesting results of this important expedition were expertly described by the leader and captain of the ship, Steen Bille, and published at the King's costs with fine plates and maps. A shortened version of the Voyage of the Galathea was published too.
Judging from the general map the expedition also touched Japan, near Jedo. The voyage went from Copenhagen to Madera and around the Cape of Good Hope to Calcutta, Java, Manilla, Canton, Nanking, Japan, Sandwich Islands, to the ports at the west-coast of South-America, and around the Cape Horn to Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and back to Copenhagen.

Good set, uncut with the bookplates of J. Valentiner.- (Some spotting in all vols.).
