Antwerp, Chr. Plantina, 1567. 8vo. Contemporary limp vellum, blindstamped gilt ornament in the centre, corner ornaments and double filets on sides, gilt and decorated spine, g.e. Title in richly decorated woodcut border with Plantin's printer's device, woodcut initials and endpiece in text. (8), 303 (1 blank); 74 (6, last blank). [Collation: *8, A-Z8, a-p8; Aa-Kk8].

One of Plantin's reprints of the Louvain Bible in pocket format with the text in double colums printed in tiny type. The margins contain references and variants. The title has a beautiful ornamental frame and has the famous printer's device of Plantin with a pair of compasses and the legend Labore et constantia. In 1559 Chr. Plantin published his first edition of this Latin Bible.
By an imperial edict all suspected Bibles in Latin, French or Dutch had been prohibited and the Theological Faculty of Louvain was commanded to prepare new authorized editions in these languages. The Latin Bible, protected by the imperial privilege first appeared in 1547 at J. Henten in Louvain, followed by the Dutch Bible in 1548 and the French in 1550. At the time of the Council of Trent, when the Vulgate was declared authentic, the Roman Catholic church possessed no duly authorized edition which was accepted as a standard. The editions of R. Stephanus were not only suspected, but even condemned by the Theological Faculty of Paris, and the Bibles of Benedictus and Clarius had gained little approval.
The 1547 recension was practically accepted as an authorized edition until the publication of the Sixtine Bible of 1590.
Nice copy with later ms. ownership's entry on title: Ph. Sandelion Rothomgensis 1721.- (Binding sl. rubbed and shrunk in spine, rests of ties, gilding on binding mostly gone).
