Schinckel, 1590. 5 parts in 1 volume. 4to. Contemporary elaborately gilt calf over wooden boards with spectacular finely engraved silver corner pieces, claps and catch plates: the chiselled corner pieces engraved with 16th-century ornamental and floral motives; the elegantly cut clasps, catch plates and fastening plates each with a biblical scene enclosed in scrollwork. On both sides three gilt ornamental borders around a gilt central panel; the panel with a central biblical scene in an oval surrounded with 16th-century strap-work is signed wth the initials 'B' and 'H'; gilt and gauffered edges. With the printer's device which is often used in 'Deus-aes bibles' with the motto 'Het rike der hemelen is als een verborgenschat in den acker. Math. 13' on the four separate titles; with the three ca. 23 x 17 cm. folding maps by Baptista van Doetecum after the maps by Petrus Plancius: the map of Eden, the map showing the Exodus route and the map of the Holy Land; ca. 20 smaller woodcuts and musical scores (in the Psalms) in the text, woodcut initials; printed in two columns. [20], 236; 92; 84; 108; [54] ll. One of the 6 issues or editions of the corrected so-called 'Deus aes Bible' which were all issued in 1590 by printers in various towns in the Netherlands. Among others by Laurens Jacobsz who in the same year also published the first Amsterdam folio edition of the Deus aes Bible. Other issues were published by Aelbrecht Hendriksz in Delft (TB 601), Barent Adriaensz in Amsterdam (TB 603), Jacob Adriaensz in Leiden (TB 606), etc. The 4to edition published by Laurens Jacobsz was printed by Aelbrecht Hendricksz. (and Bruyn Harmansz Schinckel) in Delft in 1590 in two issues (TB 604-5), undoubtedly various issues of the same edition as our copy. In these 1590 issues of the Deus aes Bible, the Plancius maps appeared for the first time. The States General had granted Laurens Jacobsz in Amsterdam on his request of 28 February 1590 the permission to publish a bible 'ende noch eenige lanttafelen' (and some additional maps). Although other printers and publishers have used the same maps, Jacobsz probably kept the copperplates in his stock until his death in 1603. He will have supplied sets of maps to other publishers to insert in their editions. An owner of a bible could insert maps according to his own preference. Many of the copies recorded by Henk Nalis in the New Hollstein catalogue of the Van Doetecum family contain only the three smaller maps, leaving out the two general maps (as also in our copy). The maps are engraved by Baptista van Doetecum and are in their first state, without the text in letterpress below the plates, as in most of the quarto editions, but with text on the back: 1. At the beginning of Genesis: Map of Eden, showing the area from Palestine to Mesopotamia, with Armenia in the north and the Persian Gulf in the south (232 x 173 mm; nr. 867). 2. At the end of Numeri: Map showing the Exodus route (230 x 172 mm). The route is shown by double lines with circle for each station, numbered 1-41. The key to the numbers in the text in letterpress on the back. The major events along the route are illustrated: for instance at the bottom right a circular plan of the Israelite camp around the Tabernacle. 3. At the beginning of the New Testament: Map of the Holy Land, showing the places mentioned in the New Testament (289 x 172 mm). At the top right a numbered list of the ten main cities of Decapolis. Small tears in the maps and some insignificant browning and water staining throughout; very skilfully re-backed. Good copy.
The New Hollstein, The Van Doetecum family, IV nos. 867-9; Moes & Burger IV, pp. 399-400; Poortman, Bijbel en Prent I, pp. 112-19 & 184-7; Typ. Batava 602 (2 copies); for the binding: H. de la Fontaine Verwey, 'Amsterdamse uitgeversbanden van Cornelis Claes en Laurens Jacobsz', in: Uit de wereld van het Boek II, pp. 33-48.
