The 'Staten Bijbel' of Catharina Maria Daey (1645-before 1717)
Re-cased: 19th-century grained brown calf, ribbed spine, with very nice contemporary chased silver mounting: corner-pieces (ca. 20 x 22 mm) with two birds, centre-pieces, one with the coat-of-arms of the owner: Catharina Maria Daey, with here initials 'M D', and one with Mary and Child, four catches, and two clasps with the words 'Cathrijna Maria Daey huijsfrou', resp. 'v. kappiten Pieter Eebels' engraved in the inside, g.e., marbled endpapers. Engraved title-page, woodcut vignettes and end-pieces. 338; (2), 109; 98 leaves. Probably first edition of the famous 'Staten Bijbel' (the official Bible of the Dutch Reformed Church, first printed in 1637), printed by the publishers Johannes van Someren, Abraham Wolfgang, Michiel de Groot and Henrik & Dirk Boom. Darlow & Moule mention only two editions in 4to of 1684, resp. 1688, and the STCN only lists a 4to edition of 1677 and an edition in 8vo of 1679 printed by the same publishers. The 'Acte van content' by Nicolas Pancras on the verso of the title (with woodcut coat-of-arms of Amsterdam) is dated 14 June 1675, and signed by J. le Mare. After the two preliminary leaves the Old Testament follows on fols. 3-338; the New Testament with separate title, dated 1677, is on fols. (2), 109; the Psalms, also with a separate title-page: De CL Psalmen des proheten Davids, met eenige andere lofzangen ... overgeset door Petrum Dathenum, ende tot gemack der sangers op een sleutel gestelt volgens de correctie van Mr. Cornelis de Leeuw. Mitsgaders de Christelicke Catechismus, formulieren en gebeden der Gereformeerde Kercken (Amsterdam, the same publishers, 1676) is on the next (98) fols. Provenance: Added are two leaves, apparently fly-leaves from an older (family-) Bible (ca. 15 x 9 cm) with annotations in two different contemporary hands: (1) recording birth- and marriage-dates of the family Daey, living on the estate Voordaen outside Utrecht between Groenekan and Maartensdijk, including the date of birth of Catharina Maria Daey, 15 August 1645, and her brothers, apparently written by Catharina Maria herself mentioning the names of her parents and ancestors; (2) written by Pieter Ebels mentioning his birthday (19 February 1644) and the day of his marriage with Catharine Maria Daey on 25 October 1681. Pieter Ebels was captain in the service of the Frisian Admiralty and later 'Tonnenmeester' of Groningen, charged with the buoying of the Lauwerszee and the Waddenzee. These leaves, together with the coat-of-arms of (Catharina) Maria Daey and her initials engraved in the center-piece and the engraved words in the inside of the clasps ('Cathrijna Maria Daey huijsfrou', resp. 'v. kappiten Pieter Eebels') prove that the Bible was the personal Bible of Catharina Maria Daey from Utrecht (Huys Voordaen between Groenekan and Maartensdijk), after 1681 living in Groningen as the wife of Captain Pieter Ebels. Very nice copy of a Statenbijbel in 12mo.
Cf. Darlow & Moule 3328 (4to ed. of 1684 and 1688); no copy in STCN.
