BEYER, Augustinus.Memoriae historico-criticae librorum rariorum, accedunt Evangeli Cosmopolitani notae ad Jo. Burch. Menckenii De charletaneria eruditorum declamationes, in quibus exempla nonnulla praecipue Hispanorum adferuntur. ![]() ![]() Dresden & Leipzig, Fred. Hekel. 1734. 8vo. Modern white cloth, red speckled edges. Woodcut vignette on title, woodcut head- and tail-pieces. (16), 301, (3) pp. Very interesting discussions and critical reviews of 100 books, published from the incunable period till far into the 18th century, partly written in Latin and partly in French by August Beyer (1707-1741), a German philologist and protestant minister from Dresden, one of the pioneers of critical bibliography. Beyer's critical reviews include discussions on books on various subjects, incl. books on the art of printing, bibliographies, natural history, literary works, history, on Roman coins, etc. etc. Examples are: Nr. 1: Catherinot, Annales typographiques de Bourges, and Nr. 53 his L'art d'imprimer (1685); 3: Franc. de Araoz, Opusculum de bono disponenda Bibliotheca (1631); 7: La Hypnerotomachia di Poliphilo (Venice, Aldus, 1545); 11: Sonnetti lusuriso di Pietro Aretino;12: Theod. Beza, Juvenalia; 21: Franc. Tuppi Parthenopoei, utriusque iuris disertissime ... (Naples, 1485); 26: Giov. Batt. (1729) (pp. 166-206); 74: Hadrianus van Beverland, Peccatum originale (1670); 75: three of the rare Dutch "gastronomical" lampoons against Papism: Papekost, Geusekost, and Jesuitenkost; 76: Dante, Opera (Milan 1473); 86: Matthaei Judicis de typographiae inventione (Copenhagen 1566), etc. etc. At the end Beyer's notes are given on De charlataneria Eruditorum by Johann Burckhard Mencke (1674-1732), one of the most famous satirical pamphlets at the time on the folly and foibles of learned men, who introduced the word 'charlatan' in German (pp. 285-301, followed by 3 pp. with index). Good copy of a rare book.- (Occasionally sl. browned).
