Dordrecht, Hendrick van Esch for Matthias Havius, 1638 (Part 2 is dated 1637). 2 parts in 1 vol. Small 8vo. Contemporary overlapping vellum. With engraved frontispiece, 2 full-page engraved frontispieces for books 1 and 2 of the first part, and 25 engraved illustrations in text by C. van Queboren after J. Hessels. (16), 778, (2 blank) pp. Second enlarged edition of this immensely famous, popular and extensive medicine chest for physicians and laymen. It surely is the first complete guide to health written in Dutch, so that interested laymen can inderstand it too. The book is based on the classical doctrine of the four humours summarized by Galen (c.129-c.200). At the same time new developments are introduced. Van Beverwijck, for instance, believes in Harvey's the theories on blood circulation and he tries to expand on it. He also extensively refers to Robert Burton's famous Anatomy of melancholy. Johan van Beverwijk (1594-1647),) studied medicine in Leyden and several other European cities. He earned his doctor's degree in medicine at the university of Padua. In 1618 he went back to his home town Dordrecht where he became town physician and lector in medicine. Van Beverwijck was a 'society doctor', who became as famous as his kinsman Vesalius by the works he published. The Schat der gesontheyt (Treasury of health), first published in 1636 (second issue 1637) is part of a trilogy: it was followed in 1641 by the Schat der ongesontheyt (Treasury of sickness) and Heel-konste (Surgery). Both works were re-published many times during the 17th century and were incorporated in Van Beverwijck's 'Complete works' from 1651 onwards. Van Beverwijck has had a classical education and he also practised also the art of poetry. The present work is devoted to all aspects of people's health, starting with a general, rather metaphysical discussion about health and the human constitution (pp. 1-70). Then in the first and main part of the work all things influencing health are treated in detail: - Book 1 'Van de bewegingen des gemoets' (the various emotions, like fury, madness, love, envy, fear, etc.; pp. 73-248); - Book 2 'Van de lucht' (seasons, climate, geographical situation, air, water, etc.; pp. 249-300; - Book 3 'Van spyse en de drack' ( foot and beverage. In a large number of chapters food is treated, from bread, porridge, and cookies, to herbs and salads, all sorts of edible roots and all sorts of fruits from the earth, from shrubs and trees, sugar, fish, butchering and meat, meat of tame animals, game and fowl, to animal products, like blood, milk, butter, cheese, eggs and honey, and from drinks, like water, wine, and beer, to tobacco, salt, etc.; pp. 301-534); - Book 4 'Van de beweginge ende ruste des lichaems ...' (bodily exercise, sleep, etc.; pp. 535-553). The second part, with a new separate title-page (p. 555): 'Het tweede deel van den Schat der gesontheyt. Waer in verhandelt wert, hoe ende op wat manier de verhaelde middelen in elk gedeelte des ouderdoms tot de gesontheyt moeten ghebruyckt werden'(Dordrecht, Hendrick van Esch , 1637) (pp. is devoted to the preservation of health, things to take into account when wanting children, how to live when pregnant, about childbirth, the new mother, midwifery, how to feed, raise and educate children until they are seven years of age, about how to live when middle-aged and when old, how best to live when weak of health or sick, etc. (pp. 555-778). The work was made extra attractive by the added poems of the most popular Dutch literary author of the 17th century, Van Beverwijck's friend and fellow townsman Jacob Cats and by attractive plates and some fine woodcut vignettes. Good copy.- (Ms. paper title-label mounted on spine; some old owner's ms. notes and numeral exercises on endpapers).
Krivatsy 1204-1205; Arents, Suppl. 287, and plate 144 (1st. ed.); cf. Bibl.Med.Neerl. p. 387 (lists 9 other edd.); not in Bibl. Walleriana, or Wellcome Library; see also: J. Landwehr, De Nederlander uit en thuis, p. 72 ff.
