One of the most popular 17th century authors on health and sickness
BEVERWIJCK, Johannes van.Alle de wercken. Zo in de medicyne als chirurgie. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Ian Iacobsz Schipper, 1656. 5 works in one vol. Large 4to. Contemporary half calf, spine divided in six compartments, with black morocco title label. With richly engraved frontispiece, 11 seperate engraved title-pages with woodcut vignettes, 1 title-page with an engraved figure depicting human anatomy, 55 engravings in text, and 3 full-page engraved plates depicting human anatomy. (8), 200; (8), 207, (1 blank); (4), 124; (2), 46; (6), 154, (8) pp. Collection of classic works on caring for people's health by Johan van Beverwijk (1594-1647). Van Beverwijk was town physician and lector in medicine at Dordrecht, and by his published works he became just as famous as his kinsman, Andreas Vesalius. Collected here are the following works: SCHAT DER GESONTHEYDT. Part 1 and 2. Devoted to all aspects of people's health, this work starts with a general, rather metaphysical discussion about health. Then in the first and main part of the work all things influencing health are treated in detail, like emotions, seasons, geographical situation, air, water, bodily exercise, sleep, and especially food. In a large number of chapters several kinds of food are treated. The second part is devoted to the preservation of health for people of all ages. For example attention is paid to what to take into account when wanting children, how to live when pregnant, about childbirth, how to feed, raise and educate children until they are seven years of age, about how to live when middle-aged and when old, how best to live when weak of health or sick, etc. SCHAT DER ONGESONTHEYDT, OFTE GENEES-KONSTE VAN DE SIECKTEN. The counterpart to the preceding work. Here health is not the central theme, but sickness. In the present edition however, the order of the chapters is not very clear. The work starts with a general description of diagnostics, a general description of diseases, and several medicinal recipes. Then the second part follows, with an engraved figure depicting human anatomy on the title-page. This part starts with the Gespreck, eertijtds gedaen, ende nu hier tot voor-reden gepast, over de noodtsakelijckheydt der anatomye, ofte ontledinghe der lichamen (Conversation on anatomy), mentioned seperately by Baumann. After the introduction follows Het eerste boeck van de sieckten des hoofts, describing the illnesses of the head, such as for example several causes for a headache. Then two other titles are included Lof der medicine, ofte genees-konste and Berg-val, ofte wederlegginge van Michiel de Montaigne, tegens de noodtsakelijkckheydt der genees-konste. The pagination starts anew, but the title reads again the second part of the Schat der ongesontheydt, and also again, we find here Het eerste boeck van de sieckten des hoofts, still the contents are quite different. Here the illnesses of the eye, ear, mouth and nose are described. The other three books describe the diseases of the throat and lungs, the internal organs, and the extremities. At the end a poem by Cardanus is translated the Lof der gichte (praise of gout), and two letters, the first by Van Beverwijck to Anna Maria van Schuurman, the second her answer. Baumann considers the last title as higly scientifically qualified, and the best work by Van Beverwyck. Van Beverwyck has written a critical and useful work, in which he expresses new ideas and visions. Van Beverwijck's last work, in which he deals with all kinds of surgical problems. Good copy.- (Binding rubbed; lower spine dam.; small burning hole in one of the title-pages).
