Second edition of this curious satire: a critical, historical and moral work by the diligent and learned Amsterdam publisher Jean Frédéric Bernard (ca. 1684-1744). The work describes in a satirical way the discovery of the infernal world, the advantages of that world, with regard to its situation, antiquity, and duration, with a particular account of its inhabitants, in which are included, the laws, and government of hell.
The first edition was published in 1759 at Pierre Gosse Junior in The Hague, in which the 15 engraved plates are also present. An English translation was published in 1760 (1775), with authorship ascribed to "Bénard." J.F. Bernard was, just as Bernard Picart, an 18th-century scientist and fervent supporter of religious tolerance.

Good copy.- (Paper on boards rubbed; title soiled, last few leaves with marginal water stain, last leaf repaired).
Caillet 1021; Lewine 52; Barbier II, 71e; not in Coumont.
