Leiden, Abraham Kallewier, 1739. 4to. Contemporary green velvet binding with a 3-cm ornamental filigree border of golden thread along the edges of both covers, marbled endpapers, g.e.; kept in a contemporary slipcase covered with pink, brown, green and orange 'Buntpapier'. Engraved allegorical title-page with printed text by F. van Bleyswijck, with the author's coat-of-arms at the top. (5 blank lvs.), 2 lvs. (=A1-2 (title and dedication), (6 silk leaves), 7 lvs. (G4, H1-4, and I1-2: laudatory poems).

Presentation copy for the author in an exceptional binding of the preliminaries of the juridical doctorate thesis of Willem Wendelius van Berckel, (1718-1789), later schout (sheriff or bailiff) van Kralingen, magistrate (secretary) of Rotterdam, and member of the Bataafsch Genootschap. He married Antonia Emilia Roosmale (1719-1786) and the couple belonged to the Rotterdam high society. Their daughter married in 1778 the nobleman J.B. Bichon Visch.
The preliminaries of the dissertation which was defended on 11 December 1739, consist of the title, the dedication to his father Engelbertus van Berckel, his brother-in-law Jacobus van der Mandere, Diderik van Hogendorp, Isaac Elsevier, Gysbrecht van Hogendorp, Adriaan Roosmale and Johannes Wesselius. At the end are the laudatory poems in Latin, French and Dutch by S. de Monchy, Leonard Patyn, F. d'A., Gerardus Noest, and two anonymous poems. The text of the dissertation itself: lvs. A3-4, B1-G3 (= 25 lvs.) not present, and replaced in this copy by 6 lvs. of silk.
