Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino (Robert Bellarmine), an Italian Jesuit (1542-1621), was a learned and pious men of great reputation with catholics and protestants alike. He had been professor at Louvain from 1569 till 1576. Then he returned to Italy where he became a Cardinal in 1598. He a.o. sat on the committee who had condemned Galilei's theses, but when Galilei was much troubled by the fact that everybody thought he was under some severe penitence, he wrote him a certificate stating that Galilei was under no penitence whatsoever, but only had signed a declaration that his theses were in contradiction with the words of the Scripture. One of his famous sayings was 'an ounce of peace is better than a pound of victory'. The present work on 'the art of dying well' was very popular and was republished for centuries.

Fine copy.
