Teaching young children things they do not understand
[BEETS, Nicolaas].Christelijke Lesjes voor Jonge Kinderen. ![]() ![]() ![]() Haarlem, Erven F. Bohn, 1843. Small 8vo. Original wrappers. IV, 42, (2) pp. First edition of a rare Beetsianum, of importance too for his pedagogical thought. Beets wanted the children to learn part of his lessons by heart, and he excused himself for this by saying that as far as he is concerned the theorema that children should not be made to learn by heart things they do not understand is no longer valid. Nicolaas Beets (1814-1903), a minister of the Church and the author of the still popular novel "Camera Obscura", although Romantic and moralistic like most of his contemporaries, had a good sense of humour and a natural common sense by the virtue of which he sometimes was called the "Father Cats" of the 19th century. The present schoolbook became very popular, and was much in use as a catechism for the very young. Good copy.- (Old owner's ms. entry on top of title).
