HOGERBEETS, Rombout. 't Vervolgh van eenige brieven van R. Hogerbeets en andere. Hoorn, Hendrick Jansz. Marius, 1669. Woodcut on title. 40 (last blank) pp.

Rare first and only edition of the collected poems, treatises on poetry and the two plays written by Johan Beets and edited by his son-in-law Dr. F. Azn. Piƫns. The work was extended with (the first part of the) letters by the famous Rombout Hogerbeets to Beets and his family and friends. Our copy is bound with the second part of those letters as well, published in 1669. The work by Beets contains his two plays: Melissa en Daphne, which is written in 3 parts and is partly autobiographical, some poems - a.o. on his girlfriend and the trade in tulip bulbs - and a songbook.
Johan Beets was born in Hoorn early in the seventeenth century and died there in 1667. He studied law in Leyden and was acquainted with the well-known professor Gerardus Vossius. Beets worked for a while in the Dutch East-Indies and was also known as a not unpraiseworthy poet. Rombout Hogerbeets (1561-1625), also born in Hoorn, was a relative of Johan Beets who played an important role in his life. He is the famous remonstrant Pensionary of Leiden, who together with Oldenbarneveld, Ledenberg, Grotius and others was arrested in 1619 and was the fellow-prisoner of Hugo Grotius at Loevestein. Johan Beets has visited him several times during his imprisonment.

Good copy with bookplate on inside frontcover with initials I. M(eulman).
