Important edition of the major work of Johann Joachim Becher (1635-1682), edited by Georg Ernest Stahl and augmented with 3 supplements and Stahl's Specimen Beccherianum. Becher's subterranean physics first appeared in 1669 and found its inspiration in Kircher's Mundus subterraneus. The author "confides that nitre, common salt and quicklime contain the principles of all things subterranean" (Thorndike). The supplements are entirely devoted to alchemical matters, including the extraction of gold from sea sand. Becher had a profound influence on Stahl, who developed Becher's concept of terra pinguis into the highly influential phlogiston theory.
Library stamp on title-page; a few leaves loose. Good untrimmed copy.
