First edition of a beautiful writing book, designed by Michael Baurenfeind (1680-1753), Emperial notary, who dedicated the book to the Mayor and Council of Neurenberg, and published by Christoph Weigel (1654-1725), famous engraver, who learned his trade by Matthias Küsel at Augsburg, and prolific publisher of prints, atlasses, globes and school books at Neurenberg.
Rare complete copy, the calligraphic plates numbered A-X, A-Z, and 1-14. They systematically teach all kinds of writing hands, indicated by the titles at the head of each plate, including Latin cursive, five ways for writing capitals in Latin cursive, a running cursive, an running but elegant cursive, basic round script, regular round script, Roman quadrat script, also engraved in white against black, a basic and circular architectural alphabet, large Quadrat printing type alphabet, alphabets in Roman Antiqua, an elegant Munich hand, Hebrew hand-writing, Greek hand-writing, several French and Italian hands, tables with numbers, various current hands, capitals in current hands, several Chancery hands, several Gothic hand-writing styles and alphabets, also printed in white against black, large initials with elaborate penwork, etc., etc. In the preliminaries the several styles and writing implements are extensively explained, including illustrations of how to hold one's pen, or rather one's quill.
