Wien, Seb. Hartl, 1793. 4to. 19th century half calf, with orange title-label. With large engraving on title and 50 full-page engraved plates by Cl. Kohl after Sollerer. (4), 200, (2) pp.

One volume of a rare educational engraved plates book for children, which however, is per volume complete in itself. Our volume contains 50 full-page engraved plates, each plate accompanied by 2 leaves of explanatory text. The first 20 plates are devoted to the human species, starting with the naked figures of a human male and female, after which follow costume-plates of the various people of the world, of the American people, including Indians, the African people, the Tartars, the Polar people, and the European people, this section ending with some anatomical plates.
The next section then is devoted to the various human occupations and professions, with prints on fishing, hunting, farming, viticulture, living in houses, the city, navigation, transport, the merchant, student, soldier, clergy, religion, marriage, childhood, the family, bathing, recreation and games, music, theater, ballet, etc., the volume ending with some prints on catastrophes, like the plague, floods, fire and an earthquake. The present volume with costume-plates and trades and professions is no doubt the most interesting of all volumes published in the series.
Joseph Edlem von Baumeister was a Vienna-born historian who embarked on his six volume publishing project, Die Welt in Bildern, in 1788, of which the present work is the fifth volume. Other volumes dealt a.o. with the mineral world and natural history.
