Haarlem, Thomas Fonteyn, 1650-1651. 12mo. Contemporary overlapping vellum. 490, 73, (5, last blank) pp.

Rare popular book with over 1500 "secrets" or interesting recipes and domestic remedies by Carolus Battus (or Baten or Batin), a Flemish refugee who from 1588 to 1601 was town physician in Dordrecht. He became especially famous for this popular collection of recipes for all sorts of illnesses for both man and beast. It was first published in Dordrecht in 1600 under a slightly different title than our edition of 1650, published in Haarlem and Amsterdam. Many other editions appeared, in 1656 and 1661 in Amsterdam and in 1664 and 1694 in Leeuwarden. The work describes facts, recipes and remedies for the kitchen, garden and hunting field, for example how to make a candle that cannot be blown out, how to strengthen a persons memory,  how to make trees fertile and even how to make glass green. A supplement is added on wine- ink- and paint making.
Good copy.
Muller 761 and 762 (other editions); Bibl. Med. Neerl. 57; Landwehr, Het nederl. Kookboek, nr. 8 note; not in any of the other gastronomic or wine bibliographies.
